Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar group mineral orthoclase. It is world-renowned for its visual phenomenon called adularescence, a soft, milky-white or blue interior glow that appears to billow across the stone’s surface as it is moved. This ethereal light effect is caused by the diffraction of light as it passes through alternating microscopic layers of albite and orthoclase. Throughout history, many cultures believed these stones were created from solidified rays of the moon.
