Celestine is a strontium sulfate intimately connected to prehistoric marine environments. Its formation is directly linked to the evaporation of seawater in shallow lagoons (evaporite process). As the waters of primordial oceans naturally contained strontium, intense evaporation caused it to concentrate and eventually crystallize. Many geodes, such as those from Madagascar, formed later when groundwater leached strontium from fossilized shells and corals, redepositing it as stunning blue crystals within sedimentary rock cavities.
